Crown lengthening is a type of surgical procedure that is performed in order to make the teeth look longer. The procedure involves the removal of gum tissue and bone from around the teeth so that more of the tooth is exposed. This can be done for both
cosmetic and functional reasons. At Dental Masters, we offer both traditional and minimally invasive crown lengthening procedures depending on the needs of our patients in the Alexandria and McLean
areas.
Crown lengthening is typically performed using a scalpel to remove the excess gum tissue and bone. The procedure can be done on one tooth or multiple teeth depending on the needs of the patient. In some cases, lasers may be used instead of a scalpel in order to minimize the amount of tissue that needs to be removed.
Once the gum tissue and bone have been removed, the dentist will then trim away any rough edges around the tooth so that it is smooth. The tooth will then be cleaned and a dressing may be applied to help protect the area as it heals.
There are a number of reasons why someone may want to have crown lengthening surgery. For instance, if a person has short teeth, they may feel self-conscious about their appearance and want to have the surgery in order to improve their smile. When a person smiles, they want to show more of their teeth rather than their gums. In addition, crown lengthening can also be used to correct an uneven gum line or to prepare the mouth for dental implants. It's a cosmetic procedure that can also be used for functional purposes.
Crown lengthening is typically performed under local
anesthesia, so you should not experience any pain during the procedure. The procedure is typically short and you shouldn't have to be anxious. You may have some discomfort and swelling after the surgery, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Overall, you should expect a smooth healing process that won't cause you much pain at all.

"I’ve been going to Dental Masters of Alexandria for years and a patient of Dr. Laviola since he started practicing here. He’s very personable, knowledgeable, takes time to explain procedures (I’ve had quite a few!) and is just an amazing dentist. The entire staff is wonderful, always helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!"

"I have been a patient of Dr. Laviola's for several years now, and this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Dr. Laviola and the whole team takes extraordinary care to make sure you are always comfortable throughout any cleaning and procedure, both major and minor (I have had both). The entire support team is also great."
