Anesthesia is a medication that blocks pain signals in the brain and is used during surgery and also to manage chronic pain. At Dental Masters, we use a variety of types of anesthesia that are proven to be safe and are commonly used to make patients feel comfortable and pain-free during their procedure. With years of experience and a dedication to a great patient experience, our team will make sure your procedure is as smooth and painless as possible at our Alexandria and McLean
offices.
Anesthesia typically starts working within minutes. The length of time it lasts depends on the type of anesthesia used. For example, general anesthesia usually wears off a few hours after surgery. Local anesthesia numbs a specific area and can last for several hours. You will be closely monitored by the team at Dental Masters
during and after your surgery to make sure you are feeling well.
There are three main types of anesthesia: general, regional, and local. General anesthesia is used for major surgeries and is given through an IV or inhaled gas. It puts you to sleep and you will not be able to feel any pain during the surgery. When administering general anesthesia, we always work with a board-certified anesthesiologist. Regional anesthesia numbs a large area of your body, such as your arm or leg. Local anesthesia numbs a small area, such as your gums. It is often used for dental procedures. You should not expect any negative impact from anesthesia as long as you follow the necessary precautions. These will be discussed with you before your surgery. In most cases, anesthesia is very effective and has few side effects. You may experience some soreness, bruising, or swelling after the surgery, but this is normal and should go away within a few days. The use of anesthesia is very quick before your surgery and you will be given time to rest after the surgery is complete.
Anesthesia is a vital part of any surgical procedure, as it ensures that the patient does not feel any pain during the operation. At Dental Masters, we understand the importance of anesthesia and are dedicated to providing our patients with the best possible care. If you have any questions about anesthesia or your upcoming procedure, please do not hesitate to

"I’ve been going to Dental Masters of Alexandria for years and a patient of Dr. Laviola since he started practicing here. He’s very personable, knowledgeable, takes time to explain procedures (I’ve had quite a few!) and is just an amazing dentist. The entire staff is wonderful, always helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!"

"I have been a patient of Dr. Laviola's for several years now, and this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Dr. Laviola and the whole team takes extraordinary care to make sure you are always comfortable throughout any cleaning and procedure, both major and minor (I have had both). The entire support team is also great."
