What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a thin plastic coating applied to the chewing surfaces of your teeth. This protective barrier helps block out decay-causing bacteria and acids from food and drinks which can lead to dental cavities and enamel erosion. Dental sealants offer an easy and noninvasive way to protect your teeth from tooth decay and cavities. Dental sealants are typically applied to the back molars in children, teens, and adults. The plastic material forms a tight bond with the natural contours of each tooth, creating an effective barrier against bacteria and acid. Additionally, dental sealants can last up to five years with proper care.

The Process of Getting Dental Sealants

The process of getting dental sealants is fast, easy, and painless. Your dentist or hygienist will examine your teeth and determine if you are a candidate for dental sealants. If so, they will clean the teeth to be sealed and dry them thoroughly. They will then apply an acidic gel to the surface of each tooth – this etches the surface and prepares it for the sealant material. After the gel has been applied, they will rinse off the teeth and dry them again. Finally, they will apply a thin layer of plastic sealant to each tooth. The sealants are hardened with a special light.

Is Getting Dental Sealants Painful?

No, getting dental sealants is not painful. The process of applying the sealants may involve some pressure to your teeth, but there should be no discomfort or pain during the procedure. Additionally, since the sealant material bonds with your tooth’s natural contours and dries quickly, you won’t feel any sensations after the treatment or have any after-effects. Dental sealants are a safe and effective way of protecting and strengthening your teeth.

Does Insurance Cover Dental Sealants?

Many insurance plans will cover the cost of dental sealants for children, teens, and adults. It is important to contact your insurer directly to determine coverage. For questions about in-network insurance providers, please contact one of our team members today.

"I’ve been going to Dental Masters of Alexandria for years and a patient of Dr. Laviola since he started practicing here. He’s very personable, knowledgeable, takes time to explain procedures (I’ve had quite a few!) and is just an amazing dentist. The entire staff is wonderful, always helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!"

"I have been a patient of Dr. Laviola's for several years now, and this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Dr. Laviola and the whole team takes extraordinary care to make sure you are always comfortable throughout any cleaning and procedure, both major and minor (I have had both). The entire support team is also great."
