Understanding Dental Cleanings

During a professional dental cleaning, your dentist or dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. Tartar is plaque that has hardened on your teeth. Plaque and tartar can cause gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. The dental hygienist will also polish your teeth. This helps to remove any stains on your teeth. The cleaning appointment is a good time to ask the dentist or dental hygienist any questions you have about caring for your teeth and gums.

What Happens During Your Dental Cleanings Visit?

Dental cleanings are a straightforward process and are typically done in less than an hour. The general process for your cleaning visit will look something like this:

Initial Inspection. Your hygienist will ask if you are experiencing any pain, if anything feels unusual, and for your medication history if it’s not on file. We’ll take a look around your mouth with a mirror to check your gums and teeth.

X-rays. While X-rays aren’t necessary for every visit, it’s recommended to get them taken at least once a year. X-rays are painless and only take a few minutes. We can locate tougher to find cavities, bone loss, decay, and shifting teeth this way.

Plaque and Tartar Removal. Your hygienist uses a scalar to scrape plaque and tartar from your teeth and gum line. It won’t be painful, but it may feel a bit sensitive. This prevents bacteria from building up in your mouth and in between your teeth.

Brushing. Your hygienist uses a special polishing brush to remove any stains for a smooth finish.

Flossing. Your hygienist will floss your teeth to remove any plaque or tartar that has built up in between your teeth or under your gum line. This is an important step in preventing tooth decay and gum disease.

Fluoride. After your teeth have been professionally cleaned, your hygienist may apply a fluoride treatment to help prevent tooth decay.

Why Dental Cleanings Matter

If you haven't been in the office for a dental cleaning in a long time, note that most dental issues are preventable. Professional dental cleanings are important to maintaining good oral hygiene and overall health. Your dentist can spot tooth decay, gum disease, cancerous growths, cavities, and other abnormalities. Most of these problems can be prevented or treated early on if caught early enough. Once it's too late, you're more than likely to experience pain or health complications. That's why a quick and painless bi-annual dental cleaning is worth it!

"I’ve been going to Dental Masters of Alexandria for years and a patient of Dr. Laviola since he started practicing here. He’s very personable, knowledgeable, takes time to explain procedures (I’ve had quite a few!) and is just an amazing dentist. The entire staff is wonderful, always helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!"

"I have been a patient of Dr. Laviola's for several years now, and this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Dr. Laviola and the whole team takes extraordinary care to make sure you are always comfortable throughout any cleaning and procedure, both major and minor (I have had both). The entire support team is also great."
