What Is Periodontal Therapy?

Periodontal therapy is a type of dental treatment that focuses on the gums and other structures that support the teeth. The aim of periodontal therapy is to prevent and control gum disease, an infection that can damage the soft tissue and bone around the teeth. This type of therapy may include deep cleaning, medications, and surgical procedures.

How Does Periodontal Therapy Work?

Periodontal therapy is designed to treat bacteria that cause gum disease. The treatment may include one or more of the following steps:

Deep Cleaning. This is also known as scaling and root planing, where plaque and tartar (a hardened form of plaque) are removed from the teeth and below the gum line.

Medications. Antibiotics or antimicrobial agents may be prescribed to help fight off bacteria in the mouth that cause gum disease.

Surgical procedures. This can involve trimming or grafting tissue, removing teeth that are severely damaged, or reshaping the bone around the teeth.

Laser therapy. This uses a special laser to remove diseased tissue and bacteria from below the gum line.

Does Periodontal Therapy Hurt?

You shouldn't experience any pain during periodontal therapy. Your dentist will use local anesthetic to ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Afterward, you may experience some slight discomfort and swelling in your gums, but this should subside within a few days.

"I’ve been going to Dental Masters of Alexandria for years and a patient of Dr. Laviola since he started practicing here. He’s very personable, knowledgeable, takes time to explain procedures (I’ve had quite a few!) and is just an amazing dentist. The entire staff is wonderful, always helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!"

"I have been a patient of Dr. Laviola's for several years now, and this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Dr. Laviola and the whole team takes extraordinary care to make sure you are always comfortable throughout any cleaning and procedure, both major and minor (I have had both). The entire support team is also great."

Brett E.

"Dr. Laviola explained everything down to the last detail ..Soon after I was getting prepared for a life-changing event with dental implants. The surgery was so simple ..If you follow all instructions on medications there is little to no pain. The dental surgeon is amazing ..Everything from start to finish was done with perfection."
